Kendall Over 30's A 2 - 3 Taunton Eagles

Despite the 8am start at Danehy Park, things looked bright for Kendall as the sun was shining and a full squad had assembled for the opening-day OTHSL Division 2S clash with Taunton.

Some new signings included Phil Keane and Gumsy. Taunton had their full numbers as usual.

Kendall started off pressing Taunton high and getting some joy dispossessing Taunton when they tried to play it out of the back. The best chance of the opening exchanges fell to Phil Keane who volleyed over from the edge of the box. Kendall opened the scoring not long after with Gary Beatty playing Jonah in over the top and he, with typical Fontela finesse, lobbed the stranded Taunton keeper. 1-0 to the Kendall.

The lead didn’t last for long, unfortunately. Taunton were awarded a free kick in a relatively unthreatening position, but after a great shot and even better save from Johno where he touched the ball onto the bar, he was unable to recover and the Taunton winger headed into an empty net.

The visitors then took the lead despite further heroics by Johno in goal. He brilliantly saved from a right-wing cross, only for a Taunton player to yet again to be first to the rebound.

The second half began with Kendall unsuccessfully vying for an equaliser. The Taunton ‘keeper was having a comfortable time of it, with the occasional set piece his only concern. Matters got even worse for Kendall when they went 3-1 down following an excellent individual effort by a Taunton striker.

Kendall didn’t throw in the towel, however, and another trademark Fontela lob cut the deficit to 3-2 with a little over 10 minutes remaining

Kendall sensed blood and went in search of the equaliser. Their hopes of rescuing a point were dealt a critical blow, however, when Gumsy was given his marching orders following a second yellow card, which, like his first, was a hard but fair challenge where he won the ball. A goal and a man down, Kendall weren’t able to muster much in the remaining time, and left Danehy dejected having started the day so well.
