The Playwright FC 1-1 Kendall A

A sunny but windy day greeted the team at the Thayer Academy in Braintree on the opening day of the BSSL Division 1 season. Having lost a few players from last year’s cup-winning squad, Kendall were short on numbers and only had three subs on the day, with a couple of players thrust into action in unfamiliar positions. A debut was given to Nick as the anchor of the midfield three.

Uncharacteristically, Kendall struggled to string together many passes, and this led to them turning the ball over in the attacking third on a number of occasions. Wanderers did create some chances, however, with the best opportunity of the opening quarter falling to Deccie Hunter who volleyed over from a Dave Sheehan cross.

Disaster struck shortly after when a clearance out of defence was charged down. The Kendall rearguard stopped as the rebuffed clearance clearly went out of touch, but The Playwright FC played on and one of their players the ball back to the penalty spot for an onrushing attacker to put in the back of the net.

Kendall trailed 1-0 at the break, but came out in much better form in the second half. Taylor Gorman played a delightful chip over the top to send Robbie Sabadoz through on goal, only for the ref to shockingly ignore the advantage and award Kendall a free for a foul on Taylor.

With the pressure mounting, a goalmouth scramble occurred and resulted in a corner. Deccie stepped up and scored directly from the set piece with his trusty left foot.

Kendall continued to apply pressure in the closing stages, and were almost rewarded at the death when Robbie crashed a header onto the underside of the bar, only for the 'keeper to grab it before a Kendall player could react.

A tough opening game, and a deserved point.

Team: Evan, Mattie, Eric, Todd, Dave, Deccie, Nick, Taylor, Marco, Francis and Robbie. Subs: Sean McGrath, Sean Kaukas, Phil.
