It was a beautiful Saturday for soccer as the Kendall C’s took to the pitch in Waltham looking to turn around what has been a difficult start to the season. The boys showed up early, and with a full squad on hand were hungry for a win. Managers Eamonn and Seamus (collectively known as the tactical mastermind “Seamonn”) set forth a 4-5-1 to start the match, hoping to string some passing together and build possession through middle of the park.

The C’s started strong, knocking the ball around well and creating space down the flanks. With the Gunners on their heels, Ed slipped a clever through-ball into the box with Jarrod giving chase. The ensuing criminal assault was somehow waved away by the referee, despite vocal appeals for an early Penalty Kick. Civil charges are pending.

The next 15 minutes were fought in the mid-field, with neither team creating any clear-cut chances. It was the most comfortable the C’s had looked in possession so far this season, with Scotty, V, and Ed linking up nicely through mid-field, and Colin holding the ball up well and muscling the Gunners fullbacks around. Unfortunately, the C’s got a bit too relaxed on the ball, and an attempted outlet pass towards midfield was cut out by an unseen opponent, who dashed through the box and tucked the ball home to make it 1-0 against the run of play.

Kendall were not to be denied, however. With solid possession between the fullbacks and the midfielders, and plenty movement going forward, the C’s found Seamus on the left wing, who carried up the sideline and sent a cross through to Jarrod. With the help of a miscue by the Gunners center back, Jarrod latched on to Seamus’s cross, and curled a left-footed effort around the keeper to draw the game level. With a bit of fortune and perseverance, the C’s were back in it.

Alas, the score-line would not remain level for long. The C’s lost possession in the middle of the pitch, and on the counter attack the Gunners crafted some tidy one-touch passing into the box. The Gunners capitalized on the mistake, punishing the C’s with a shot just past the reach of Johnno, who managed to get his fingers on the ball, but not enough to keep it out. 2-1 Gunners.

The C’s pressed hard to find an equalizer, with Mike Carolan, Brendan Mulkern, and Ben Chamas adding great energy down the sidelines, and the back line holding strong. The half ended with the C’s facing a 2-1 deficit.

Kendall came out with high energy and intensity in the 2nd half, pushing hard up the field and dominating the first 10 minutes in search of an equalizer. Despite the strong start to the half, the C’s were not able to generate any clean chances. As the half wore on, the match became a mid-field battle, neither side willing to give ground and with few scoring chances. Midway through the half, Johnno came up with a huge save to keep the score 2-1, coming out to block an initial shot, and smothering the rebound. The C’s back-line, led in the middle by Jay and Curley, held strong throughout the half, absorbing pressure and finding outlets to the wings.

With 10 minutes to go, Seamonn altered the formation to a 4-4-2, but the more offensive-minded approach was not enough to earn an equalizer. Although a disappointing result overall, the C’s can take solace from the marked improvement in possession and play all around, and will look to continue progressing towards an elusive first victory.
