KWFC Christmas Party 2012

Yes it's that time of year again - pencil in Saturday, December 8th on your calendars before your better halves book you for some lame work related Christmas party.

The Kendall Wanderers FC Christmas Party will be held at Stoddard's Pub in the heart of Downtown Boston this year - less than a 2 minute walk from Park Street and Downtown Crossing T stations on the Red Line. See here for some info on the pub - stoddardsfoodandale.com.

The committee are planning on mixing this up a bit this year with having more of a social type of dining experience, with passed hor d'oeuvres, etc. instead of a sit down dinner. We're also planning on having a DJ on the night too, so don't miss out!

So, keep Dec 8th free on your calendar for this and we'll see you there.

More details on the event to follow soon.

KWFC Over 30 A's - NEOTHSL Division 2S Fall Champions 2012

Kendall O 30 A's 5-0 Crafty Veterans.

A last minute change of venue did little to distract Kendall from the task at hand. First half goals from Ben, Derrick, & Jonah had Kendall firmly in the driving seat at the half. Paul Garvey & Jonah chipped in with second half goals to make it 5-0. Fantastic commitment & effort from the squad all season long to finish undefeated, winning promotion to Division 1.

Special mention to Mike Mc for going above & beyond to get us onto a field at Moakley.

KWFC Over 30s A are also in the playoffs semi-final next Sunday morning at 10am. The venue is TBD.

BSSL Cup Final

Our BSSL A team lost in the cup final today to First Wave by 3 goals to 2. Our lads were the better team on the day, but unfortunately conceded 3 goals from headers to go 3-0 down and just ran out of time at the end when they pulled the game back to 3-2 with 5 mins to play. It was a brilliant effort by our young and very talented team who haven't been playing together very long at all. If this teams sticks together, they'll be favorites for a league and cup double next year. You heard it here first!

Weekly Roundup

Four games played and four wins this weekend.

Kendall A warmed up for the BSSL Cup Final next weekend with a comfortable 6-1 win over MIT at Madison Park on Saturday. Kendall got off to a quick start and were 4-0 up at the break with goals from Robbie Sabadoz, Mark Nolan, Taylor Gorman and Matt Cummings. Declan Hunter and Robbie Sabadoz put away two more in the second half before MIT scored a late consolation. The As now play First Wave in the BSSL Cup final next Saturday November 3rd. Time and venue to be confirmed.

Kendall Bs finished off their season with a win against Sports Identity. Kendall started slowly and Sports Identity capitalized taking the lead 1-0 midway through the first half. Kendall responded well and started to dominate possession. They almost pulled level when Robert Schmidt-Chang cut in from the left and fired a fierce shot only to see it hit the underside of the bar. Kendall were eventually rewarded with a goal when Jesse Brown rose above everyone to bury a header in the corner of the goal from a Kieran Reid free kick. Kendall continued their momentum into the second half controlling the game and making chances. They took the lead when Achraf Hosny played a superb pass which unlocked the Sports Identity defense and played Joel Kayima in on goal. Joel kept his calm and slotted the ball low past the onrushing goalkeeper. There was a dramatic finish however with Sports Identity grabbing a late goal to make the score 2-2. With only injury time remaining, Kendall didn't give up and scored a dramatic winner. Jonah Fontela played a diagonal ball which split the Sports Identity defense which Jesse Brown hit first time. He saw his shot fly in off the post and give Kendall a 3-2 win. A great win for Kendall B and a lot of positives to take in to next season.

Kendall o30sA travelled to Holliston for an 8am kickoff in need of a win to continue their title charge. Kendall dominated for most of the match, deservedly getting the breakthrough in the dying minutes from Jonah Fontela following some wing wizardry from Uarly. Stalwart Barry Roche marshaled the Kendall defense expertly to keep the clean sheet.

Kendall O30Bs kept their playoff hopes alive with a well-deserved 1-0 win over Parkway in W. Roxbury. We dominated the game, playing our best football of the season, but couldn't convert, until 10 minutes from the end when Johnny Kilpatrick found a gap in the defence and smashed home from close range. Great performances at the back from Gerry Daly, Lar Barden and Peter Bilowz, while Tomislav Zovko, Collie Hamell and Marcus Monteiro easily won the midfield battle.

Monday night training is cancelled due to the weather but we'll have training on Wednesday as normal. All welcome of course even if your team has finished up for the year.

Weekend Roundup

With the bad weather this weekend, only three of the five Kendall teams were in action as the BSSL A and Over 30s B team games were cancelled.

On Saturday, the BSSL B team had a disappointing 3-2 loss away to Analog. Kendall got off to a dreadful start in the wet conditions and found themselves 3-0 down within 25 minutes. Kendall fought back with two goals from Jesse Brown and almost snatched a draw at the end but came up short.

The BSSL C team fell victim to a heartbreaking last minute equalizer to draw 1-1 with FC SW. The Cs opened the scoring early in the second half with a Brendan Mulkern goal after good work by Jarrod Burton and Toby Zaleski. Heroic Kendall defending kept the opposition at bay until a cruel breakaway goal moments before the full time whistle resulted in the teams sharing the spoils.

On Sunday, the over 30s A team had a hugely-important 2-1 win over Crafty Veterans down in Hingham. The game was played in dreadful conditions and after a tight first half the score was 0-0 at the break. Kendall started the second half much better but went 1-0 down slightly against the run of play. Kendall had plenty of time to come back though and come back they did courtesy of a great header by Ben Sprayregan from a pinpoint Barry Roche cross. With 25 minutes remaining, Kendall were not settling for the draw and took the lead courtesy of a great individual goal from late-arrival Jesse Brown. Just like strike-partner Jonah Fontela the previous week, Jesse scored the winner on Sunday with his third goal of the weekend after getting two on the Saturday for the BSSL Bs. Kendall saw the game out holding the ball well and taking no risks at the back on the waterlogged pitch. Great team effort on the day to leave the As joined top of division 2S with five games remaining.

Last Weekend's Roundup

Two wins and two losses from the four games this weekend with Kendall A's BSSL D1 match being rescheduled.

Kendall B had a much-needed and well-deserved 3-2 win over Boston Rovers in BSSL D2 action. Jesse Brown put Kendall 1-0 up with a great free-kick 30 minutes into the first half but Rovers equalized just before half time. Kendall dominated the second half but missed a slew of great chances before Rovers punished them with a goal on the break with just 20 minutes left. This seemed to spur Kendall into life and Jonah Fontela quickly equalized. With just a couple of minutes remaining, Kendall won a free kick which Dave Power delivered perfectly to the back post. The ball fell to Jonah Fontela who stooped to head home the winner to reward a very good team performance from the Bs.

Kendall C had a tough loss to Commoners. Mistakes in the first half gifted two goals to the opposition. Battling hard the Kendall were level at the half, after goals from Colin Flaherty and Scott Jepson. More defensive lapses early in the second saw Commoners take a 4-2 lead however. A Cobhan Philipson penalty with 15 left gave Wanderers hope but despite some chances they were unable to find an equalizer.

On Sunday, The Over 30s As had a vital 1-0 win over Holliston to get back to winning ways following two consecutive draws. Kendall started very well and dominated possession. John O'Toole was forced into a double-save to prevent Holliston from taking the lead on a breakaway before Jonah Fontela grabbed his third goal of the weekend with a brilliant individual effort. Fontela cut in from the right and beat a couple of defenders before unleashing a great strike with his left foot. In the second half, Kendall were guilty of missing some great chances to secure the points and almost paid the price again with Holliston hitting the crossbar with a penalty with Barry Roche reacting quickest to the rebound. Kendall defended well held on to the ball well to see the rest of the game out. Plenty to work on for future weeks but a solid team performance.

The Over 30s Bs had a disappointing 2-1 loss to Parkway FC. Player Manager Johnny Kilpatrick scored to put Kendall 1-0 up at the break but Parkway fought back with two goals to take the lead. Kendall missed some great late chances to equalize but came away disappointed on the day.

Training continues on Mondays and Wednesdays at 8pm in Pine Banks, Melrose. New players always welcome.

Weekly Roundup

One win, three losses and a draw to report in the five games this week.

Kendall A had a very impressive 3-2 win over USASA Amateur Cup champions Battery Gunners. Kendall fell 1-0 behind only to fight back with three goals from Taylor Gorman(2) and Ben Brewster. Kendall had a few late chances on the break to finish the game off as Gunners pressed but it was Gunners who made it 3-2 to setup a nervous last five minutes which Kendall survived for a very impressive win heading into the BSSL cup semi final in a few weeks. Excellent performance from all 14 players on the day.

Kendall B had a disappointing 2-0 loss to top of the table Eagles in division 2. Kendall fell behind early before settling down and enjoying the majority of the possession as the game went on. However, they could not turn that possession into a goal and Eagles wrapped up the points with a second goal with five minutes remaining.

Kendall C went down 7-2 to Gunners OHP in division 3. Colin O'Flaherty and an OG accounted for the Kendall goals.

On Sunday, the Over 30s As drew 2-2 with top of the table rivals Needham United. Kendall went 2-0 up with two goals in the middle of the first half from Uarlinton Almeida and Ian Sinclair. Needham pulled one back just before half time to set up an exciting second half where both teams had chances before Needham equalized with five minutes to go. Two points dropped for the As in their push for promotion to division 1 but they are still unbeaten after three games and still very much in the hunt with seven games remaining.

The over 30s Bs suffered their first loss of the season as they went down 2-1 to Medfield. Kendall took the lead after 10 minutes courtesy of an Andy Devey header from a Noel Coffey corner but Medfield equalized before half time. Both teams pushed for the winner in the second half with Kendall being denied by some fine saves from the Medfield keeper. Unfortunately it was Medfield who got the breakthrough to go 2-1 up with ten minutes remaining. Kendall threw everything at them in search of the equalizer but it was not to be. Kendall are now joined top of the table with Parkway and Taunton in what looks like being another close race for promotion.

Weekly Roundup

Kendall A lost 4-2 to Middlesex in an end-to-end encounter. Kendall went 1-0 up just before the half time whistle thanks to a very well-worked goal finished off by Ben DS. Middlesex started the second half much better and were 2-1 up within 5 minutes. Kendall fought back and equalized, courtesy of an own goal after a dangerous cross from Norbert Guery, with just a few minutes left but Middlesex struck with two late goals to clinch the 4-2 win.

Kendall B had a disappointing 3-0 loss to Groton House. Kendall fell behind early thanks to an own goal and the score was 1-0 at the half. The next goal was always going to be important and Groton got it midway through the second half before clinching the game with a free kick.

Kendall C had a tough 2-1 loss to The Druids. Jarrod Burton got the Kendall goal and Robbie Schwieder saved a penalty on his Kendall debut. This was a good performance though which left the Cs feeling they deserved more and they'll be hoping for all three points next week.

The over 30s A team had a disappointing 2-2 draw with Natick FC on Sunday morning. Kendall fell 1-0 behind when a cross from the right wing found its way to the back post where a Natick striker was lurking to finish it off. Kendall hit back quickly though with a brilliant finish from Uarlinton Almeida following Ben Sprayregan and James Canny winning a kick out. Kendall had the lion's share of the possession in the second half and looked like they had got their reward with five minutes to go when more great work by Uarlinton down the left was finished off by Jesse Brown. However, Natick again hit down the right wing and a great cross was again finished off by the same Natick striker to leave the final score at 2-2.

The only win of the weekend came from the over 30s B team who had a 3-0 win over Minutemen FC with Stephen Wallace getting two and player-manager Johnny Kilpatrick getting the other. The Bs are sitting pretty on top of the league after two games with 13 goals scored and none conceded.

We have Melrose on Monday and Wednesday night at 8pm as usual this week. A good turnout on both nights would seem like a good idea so we can look for better results next week.

Fall Season Begins

Kendall Wanderers B team had a frustrating 3-1 loss to Milford Lusitanos FC in their BSSL Division 2 clash in Moakley Field on Saturday. Kendall went 1-0 up thanks to great work by James Horgan down the left who beat a couple of men before hitting the post but Dave Power was on hand to finish the rebound. Milford threatened on a number of occasions but were denied by John O'Toole in the Kendall goals. Just before half time Milford equalized when a one-on-one was saved by O'Toole only for the rebound to be tucked away by Milford. The second half was an even affair. Kendall missed a great chance to go ahead when a Jesse Brown penalty was well saved by the Milford keeper. Milford were then awarded a penalty of their own which was saved by O'Toole only for Milford to again follow up on the rebound and take the lead. With Kendall pressing for an equalizer, Milford closed out the game with a good third goal. A disappointing result for the Bs who were left to rue numerous very good chances when the score was tied at 1-1.

The BSSL A team and C team games from this weekend were rescheduled.

The Over 30s A team got their Over-the-Hill Soccer League Division 2 season off to the perfect start with a 6-0 win away to Concord United on Sunday. Kendall were 3-0 up at half-time thanks to goals from Barry McNulty, Uarlinton Almeida and Jesse Brown. Kendall continued where they left off in the second half with three more goals from Kenny McCarthy, Derrick James and Almeida. A strong all round team performance to get the season started with Cork's Dave Power and Donegal's Barry McNulty particularly effective in midfield and Mayo native Kieran Lowe very solid in defense.

The Over 30s B team also got their OTHSL Division 5 season off to a flying start with a 10-0 victory over Old and Broken FC. Kendall’s opponents were short on numbers and Kendall took full advantage establishing an early lead through a well-taken goal from full-back Brian McCormack after an inviting cut-back from winger Dennis Cunningham. Further goals from Johnny Kilpatrick and Steve Wallace killed the game off as a contest and Kendall were up 4-0 by half time. Old and Broken FC were further depleted through injury in the second half and Kendall added to their tally with goals from Kilpatrick, Cunningham, Andy Devey, and Wallace who completed his hat-trick.

A Team Through to Cup Semi-Final

Massive win for Kendall A today beating MPS 2-0 in the BSSL Cup quarter final.

Kendall took the lead 13 minutes into the second half. Declan Hunter crashed a great free kick off the post and Pat Day was in the right spot on the back post to calmly tuck away the rebound.

Kendall wrapped it up with 4 minutes remaining as MPS were pressing for an equalizer. A typical tricky run by Mo Keita was followed by a perfect pass to Norbert Guery who calmly side-footed the ball into the top corner.

This was a great team performance by the Kendall to wrap up the Spring half of the season and put the club in its first BSSL cup semi-final since winning the trophy in 2001.

Big Weekend Ahead

A big weekend coming up for the club with all 5 teams in action and 4 of them having their season openers. Good luck to all involved!

This year we would like to have a match report for every game that we can put on KendallWanderers.com and create a link to it here on the new Facebook group's page to entice a bit of banter. So, do your managers a favor and offer to type up a quick match report instead of them having to ask you to. You'll probably only have to write one a season.

For an example of a report from last year, click here. Your report can be as long or as short as you like, but use this opportunity to praise the good work done by individuals or have a friendly joke at your teammate's expense. Also, don't forget to include the Match Statistics details as can be seen on the right sidebar at the link above. All reports can be emailed to Barry (Baz) McNulty at leifear@hotmail.com and I'll get them online asap.

This Weekend's Training Schedule

The schedule for this weekend is the same as last weekend.

Only 7 more weeks to the start of the BSSL season and only 5 more weeks to the start of the over 30s season so its time to start coming along.

We should have all the 2012 managers in place and announced in the next week or two and then we'll look to ramp up the pre-season activites with friendly games, trials etc etc during March. Stay tuned for news on that over the next couple of weeks.

To remind you all of the weekend schedule again:

1) Friday - 7pm -10pm - Indoor - Winter Hill Community School, Somerville.
We have the gym for all three hours so come along and leave at whatever time works for you.
The full address is: 115 Sycamore Street, Somerville MA 02145

2) Saturday - 2:30pm - Outdoor - Danehy Park Turf

3) Sunday - 5:45pm-8pm - Indoor - Peabody School, Cambridge

Upcoming Table Quiz

Hello everyone,

The first KWFC social event of the 2012 is soon to be upon us (of course, that's calling the AGM a business event instead of an excuse for a beer on a Sunday afternoon!). The annual table quiz will take place in the Spirit Bar, 2046 Massachusetts Avenue, Cambridge on Tuesday, March 6th at 7:30pm (a short walk from Porter Square T-Stop). It's always a fun night so make sure to come along and feel free to bring your friends and/or significant other if you wish.

As this is simply a club social event and not a fund raiser the quiz entry fee will only be $10 per person and all proceeds will go toward the prize money on the night.

Also, you can opt to self arrange teams teams of 4 before the night or just come along and form teams on the night.

Lastly, if you're feeling peckish - the Spirit Bar have a special on Tuesday nights of a Burger + Fries with a Sam Adams for $10!

See you all there!

Additional Indoor Session

Hey lads,

In addition to Sunday nights at The Peabody School, Cambridge (5:45pm) we now also have indoor on Friday nights from 7pm to 10pm at the Winter Hill Community School, Somerville. The first Friday night is this week - Feb 17th. The full address is: 115 Sycamore Street, Somerville MA 02145.

Saturday also looks like being a really nice day so we'll likely go outdoors again at 2:30pm at Danehy Park, Cambridge on Saturday 18th. We'll confirm that before the weekend.

All new players are very welcome. In fact, this is the time when new players need to start coming along if they are interested in playing with the club in 2012.

First Committee Meeting of 2012

The 2012 committee had it's first official meeting on Thursday night and we would like to share that it is our sentiment at the moment to put 3 teams into the BSSL this year.

Before we make any final decisions please be sure to come along to any indoor/outdoor training or scrimmages that are available such as the one at 2:30pm at Danehy Park, Cambridge, so we can really gauge interest.

Thanks, 2012 KWFC Committee

2012 AGM News

Thanks to everybody who attended the 2012 AGM on Sunday.

With an attendance of 35 it was the best-attended club AGM in a very long time, possibly ever, and shows that there is a very solid core in the club who are eager for 2012 to be a successful year on and off the pitch. It was great to see.

Thanks to the outgoing committee for their contributions in 2011 and special thanks to Joe Regan for once again chairing the AGM and, Chopper aside, making it look easy.

The 2012 committee is:

  • President: John O'Toole
  • Vice President/Secretary: Darren Skehan
  • Treasurer: Donal Keane
  • Assistant Treasurer: Dean Regrut
  • Fundraising Officer: Eamonn Fitzgerald
  • PRO: Barry McNulty
  • Assistant PRO/Fundraiser: Brian McCormack
  • Fields & Equipment Officer: Mark Nolan

KWFC AGM Confirmed: Sunday, Jan 29th at 2pm in The Burren, Davis Sq

Alright lads,

The time and venue for the Kendall Wanderers FC has been confirmed - Sunday, Jan 29th at 2pm at The Burren, Davis Sq, Somerville.

There will be a lot of important topics to discuss this year, so make sure you come along, have your say, and cast your vote!

We would like to make it clear that the AGM is not just about selecting a committee and that those attending will not be press-ganged into serving in 2012.

Because game-day attendance was so sparse on occasions in 2011, we need to have a discussion on the number of teams to field going forward so literally every club member (and future members) has a vested interested in attending and having their say.

We hope you all can make it.

Indoor Time Change Today Sunday, Jan 15th

Today's indoor session will be held for 2 hours from 6pm - 8pm at the Peabody School. The school's custodian let us into the gym 30 minutes early last week if anyone wants to get in early for a touch of the ball or a warm up.

Free parking and the entrance to the gym is at the back of the school (don't try to enter via the front doors on Rindge Ave as they will most likely be locked).

As always, bring your own waters/gatorades and $5 to cover the cost of the hall. Cheers.

See you all there.
