The Over 30Bs were looking to bounce back quickly from the their first defeat of the season, but it was always going to be a tall order when the opponents were top of the league and our first-choice keeper, his back-up, and a number of starters cried off. We eventually began the game with 13, added one at half-time, but then lost 2 to injury by the end. United International, in contrast, were big, strong and quick and with 6 or 7 subs. Kudos to defender Jeff Sanders who volunteered to go in goal, and endured a very long 90 minutes!

Kendall started reasonably brightly and tried to pass the ball around. However the opponents were winning the 50/50s and a lot of our passes were coming up short in the long grass. (The home team has clearly more experience of this.) After 10 minutes, a miscommunication at the back allowed the UB striker a clear run on goal and he tucked it away. We battled on gamely and started to create some nice passing moves, particularly on the left where new boy Brendon Collins linked well with Martin Langley and Collie Hamell. Our first real opportunity was created on the right however by Noel Coffey who took the ball to the byline and floated over a lovely cross which evaded the keeper and found the distinguished brow of skipper Hamell. Unfortunately he could not get enough downward force on it and the ball sailed over the bar. There was sense that opportunities would be scarce and we needed to make the most of anything we got.

We continued to push forward in search of an equalizer but unfortunately left ourselves exposed at the back and were caught on the hop to go 2-0 down. However all was not lost as a nice through ball evaded the home defence, and Johnny Kilpatrick, ignoring loud appeals for offside, ran through on goal, took his time and slid a left-footed shot (shocker!) across the keeper and into the corner. 2-1 and hoping to keep it that way until half-time. However it was not be, and another goal conceded to make it 3-1 at the break.

Hope arrived at half-time in the less than punctual form of Gerry Daly, and we threw him into a 3-man defence, as part of a 3-4-1-2 formation, with Steve Wallace just behind the front men (a combination of Dennis, Johnny and Zakhar). It was a brave attempt to try and get back into the game but was ultimately folly, as injuries and fatigue set in and the defence found itself overrun. Michael Queenan (C team stalwart helping us out) and Jimmy Gordon (converted to emergency center-back) were extremely busy, and won many headers but they were pushing a rock up a hill. As the game wore on, United International dominated proceedings and created a number of one-on-ones with the keeper, leaving Jeff stranded. 7-1 in the end. For our part we created a couple of chances, with Steve almost catching the keeper out with long-range effort from a tight angle, and Johnny volleying over the bar from a similarly narrow angle.

Man of the Match goes to Jimmy Gordon for battling manfully in a new position. Honorable mentions to debutant Brendon Collins, who brought a touch of class to midfield, Zakhar who showed some nice touches up front, Mike Queenan who busted a gut alongside Jimmy, and Jeff for donning the gloves. Also, great to see OTHSL veterans Anders Lofgren and Tom Esch on the sidelines. The parade of legends did not have the motivational effect that they themselves thought it would, but if we can get Tom a tracksuit and a clipboard, then a managerial career surely awaits. Plenty of husky-voiced swearing from the Swede, but disappointing that he did not produce the live tweeting that he has been demanding for so long!
