Weekend Results

A tough weekend for the Kendall Wanderers, with 3 defeats and only the 1 win.

The B team were beaten 4-2 by Boyne Gunners, having fought back from a 3-0 halftime deficit. Dave Sheehan and Jesse Browne were on target (again), but unfortunately a late goal put paid to the comeback, despite the battling of Ben Sprayregan & Mick "Sicknote" Murphy. The B team remain in 6th place, going into next weeks big finale vs the A team.

The C team went down 4-1 to Rovers, Seamus Dromney getting his first of the year for the Kendall, while good performances by Julius Gross & Mike Tuttle couldn't prevent the loss. That defeat effectively relegates the Cs to the third Division, having played a few tough games in which the result should have gone the other way which could have ensured survival - but it was not to be. There is now a winter of rebuilding in front of Mike Curley and Dave Weibes team.

The Over Thirties suffered their first loss since summer, in a top of the table clash with the White Eagles, on Sunday morning. A clear penalty and sending-off were denied by the referee when Jonah Fontella was taken down in the act of shooting, after slipping through the Eagles defense, and beating the last man. The resulting free came to naught, but Jonah still managed to score after a beautiful move with Paul Garvey, who was making hay down the left hand side. A ball lost in the opposition half, and a quick break, resulted in an Eagles goal, however, and a second followed when the Kendall failed to clear from a corner. 2-1 at the half didn't reflect the Kendall work in the first half, and for the first 15 minutes of the second they looked likely to remedy that injustice. The referee had a further influence when issuing an unfair booking for dissent, which resulted in the abrupt departure from the scene of a certain Bolivian, and that coincided with the backline coming under more pressure from the Eagles. A couple of half chances were missed, and it looked like curtains when Barry Roche made an ill-timed challenge to give away a penalty. John O'Toole stood tall, though, and it went wide, & he saved his team again a bit later from another Eagles break, before they got a third from a ball over the left back position. The final 10 minutes of heavy Kendall pressure didn't yield a goal, and leaves the O-30s in second with 2 matches to play.

The weekend was saved by the A team, who left it very late to actually start playing some decent football. The bare 11 players were there for the start, and the 20 minute late arrival of the Saint (strolling in from his girlfriends house) coincided with the arrival of 4 Middlesex players, to give them the full 11, with 3 subs. Smarkers was cool at the back, and James Canny was solid as well in dealing with the Middlesex tactic of "bang it long", but the midfield of Gummsie & Philly Keane was having trouble finding telling passes. Nil all at halftime, the match didn't really spark until the last 15 minutes of the second half. Paddy Curran was much better at centerback in the second half, but a moment of miscommunication with Smarkers gifted Middlesex a goal with 13 minutes to play. It took this shock to wake up the team, and with 3 across the back, they actually started to find some passes. A Matty Shuffle ball found Adam on the break, and when he was taken down, Derrick James stepped up to slot home the peno, with 9 minutes to go. A draw being not good enough, the plan stayed 3 at the back and 3 up front, with plenty of wide support. It was from another Jesse Palma cross, which was knocked down, that Adam Herstig pounced to bang home the winner, with 4 minutes left. The Kendall played out time by retaining possession nicely, leaving the A Team 4th in the league, with 2 matches to play.

Next Saturday, the A team play the B team at 10am in Ceylon park, in a great finale to the season, and it will be back to the Banshee for pints and analysis after. The Annual Married vs Singles match will take place in the next few weeks also, followed by the clubs annual Christmas party - stay tuned for dates and times.

Weekend Results

A respectable weekend on the results front for the club.

The B team continued their great run with another win, this time beating Middlesex 4-1 in Ceylon Park. The scorers were Dave Sheehan, Doug Charton (2) & Jesse Brown, with his 4th goal for the club in 2 weeks - marriage definitely suits him. This result leaves the B team 6th in the table on 20 points, only 3 behind the A team, and ensuring a great first year in the First Division for Shane McElwees men.

The A team were beaten by the Boyne 4-2, despite being up 1-0, from a class Mo Keita strike. Some bad marking then gave the gunners 2 goals, before Moany Jonah Fontella finished a nice move with his second of the week. Kendall then pressed hard for the third, but were caught on the break, and despite some heroics from John O'Toole, gave up another before the end. This result leaves the A team 4th in the table and effectively extinguishes any chance of winning the league, but wins from the last 3 matches would set up the team nicely for next season.

The C team suffered a heart-breaking 1 all draw, having been up 1-0 with 15 minutes to go, in their battle for survival in Division 2. A great run and battling finish got Capt Deano Regrut his first goal of the season, and set up what would have been a great victory. However, such hopes were dashed 8 minutes from time, by a cross which glanced off a Kendall head & found the top corner of the net. Paul was immense in goal & Connor McCusker battled hard in his second game for the club. The result leaves the team a mountain to climb to stave off relegation.

The O-30s played Delta Service BU in Rotch on Sunday morning, winning 2-1, to stay joint top of Div 2. They knocked the ball around nicely, and the first goal was scored by M. Jonah Fontella (2nd of the weekend), after a nice cross from Rigo was knocked into his path. Another batting goal from Mike "Kiz" Kiziuk put the Dirties seemingly firmly in command, and the 2-0 half-time lead seemed quite safe, particularly after a Dennis Cunningham free was barely cleared off the line. However, a few mistakes gifted Delta a goal straight from the kickoff, and suddenly the Kendall were under pressure. After a few more chances for the opposition, they settled a bit, however, and were unlucky not to add to the scoreline after good work by Paul Garvey set up a few chances. Unfortunately, 4 yellow cards leaves very little room for mistakes in the remaining 3 matches, but Barry Roche will insist on iron discipline from here out.

Weekend Results

It was a good weekend for the Kendall Wanderers Club, headlined by the B Team victory over league leading MPS.

The B team continued a great stretch of results, winning for the 4th time in 6 matches, to beat MPS away from home in Wayland on Saturday. Jesse Brown scored another vital one for the club, with the only goal of the game, and Dave "Horse" Power was immense in midfield. Dave Sheehan worked hard all day, as did Doug Charton to secure an excellent result, which, combined with the A team victory over Carico, will surely assure a place in Division 1 for the B team next year.

The A team looked a bit rusty after a week off, when beating a weakened Carico side 3-1. A slow start was compounded by some lethargic looking play during the early part of the match, with some loose marking and the ball being given away too much for Johnnos liking. The intensity picked up a bit halfway through the first half, and some nice play was rewarded by a goal from Mo Keita. A second before half time from Marcus Cabralis, after nice work by Skippy Sinclair, gave some breathing room, after Carico had hit the bar twice. The belated arrival of the way too laid back Macna "Johnny" Janny enabled the Saint to play in his more accustomed role, and the defending was overall a bit better, despite a Carico goal from a clearance turned breakaway. Another goal from Mo sealed the somewhat less than fluent win, putting the A team into 5th place with a game in hand, and an outside chance of a run at the top.

The C team went down 2-0 in the first half against league leaders Groton House, but battled back with a goal from Todd after good work by Chili Obinawa, and were on top for a good stretch of the 2nd half. However, the old failing of not marking from set pieces allowed a Groton defender to run into the box unmarked and head in from a corner from 4 yeards out, effectively killing the comeback. It finished 3-1, not a fair reflection of the play, but an indication of how the season has gone for the C's.

Moany Jonah Fontella marked his comeback from a Caribbean sojorn with the first goal for the Dirty Thirties, after a brutally early 8am Sunday morning kickoff in Holliston. The backline was alive to all danger from the "off", however, with Wideboy Steve Taylor kicking lumps out of the Holliston forwards. A typically battling tussle in the box involving Aido Finnan, plaster across the eye and all, yielded a penalty, which was converted by Jesse Brown for his second of the weekend and third of the week. Smarkers and Chopper helped knock the ball around nicely in midfield, and the team played some lovely football, which was only spoiled by the the intervention of the McCormack/Hamell cousins. A third goal was added by the Chairman from an "on the money" Aido corner, and the win keeps the Dirties in at least joint top spot in the table.

Next week sees the As take on the Boyne Gunners, & the Bs at home to Middlesex in Ceylon Park at noon on Saturday. The C team play Boston Gunners at 2pm in Wayland HS, also Saturday, & the O-30s play Delta Service BU at 9.30am in Rotch field on Sunday.

Weekend Results

It was a tough weekend for the Kendall, with the B and C team beaten on Saturday, but it was saved by a tight win for the Over 30s team on Sunday morning. The A team match was postponed.

The B team had an unlucky loss to top of the league First Wave at Ceylon Park on Saturday, when 2 goals conceded in the last ten minutes cost them a point. Kenny "SuperMac" McCarthy was again superb for the Bs, with Dave Sheehan battling all over the park against a team that featured ex-international and World Cup player, Avery John. This leaves the Bs in 6th place with 4 matches to go.

An even more undeserved 1-0 loss was suffered by Mike Curleys C team against fellow strugglers Eagles. The chance to move equal on points with their opponents, in a classic "six-pointer", was squandered and leaves an uphill journey in the relegation battle for the C team in their remaining 4 matches. On a disappointing afternoon, Mike Queenan was safe at the back, while Mike Moynihan tried everything to condure a goal from the wing.

The Dirty Thirties left it late to secure the points, but a Jesse Brown classic, where he bundled the goalie, 2 defenders AND THE BALL over the line, did the job. It was a fully deserved win, since Kel Kau were well marshalled at the back, Nick "CraZee" Zse particularly good there. Mark "Smarkers" Smethers, fresh from a tour of England and Germany provided bite in midfield and Shane "the Tokyo Express" McElwee ably supported. This win leaves the O-30s top of the league, with 3 wins and 2 draws, and in the hunt for promotion to the first division.

The club has a Bowling night at Flatbread/Saccos bowling, in Davis Square at 8pm.

September 27th, 2010

Weekend Results

It was a fairly good weekend in terms of results for the Kendall Wanderers Football Club.

The A team made hard work of winning, due to some profligate finishing, but ultimately prevailed 2-1 against the Playwright to move within 9 points of the leaders, with 5 matches to go. Dwight Campbell scored his first goal for the club, and Mini McRory got the winner on one of his rare appearances. Hopefully he will lend a hand for the remaining matches, as a good run in might see them go close. Mike Porter and Matty "Shuffle" Scheufele were solid throughout, with Dan Redden looking very bright in his Kendall debut, after a big money move from Portlaoise Rovers.

An unbeaten run of 5 matches came to an end for the B team, with some wasted chances coming back to haunt them towards the end, against 4th placed Cambridge Arsenal. Jesse Brown (against his old team)and Dave Sheehan did the damage for the Kendall in the 3-2 defeat, which leaves them in a respectable 6th place in the table. A return to winning ways is hoped for next week, after 3 wins in the previous 3 weeks.

The C team finally put a winning performance together against fellow strugglers Union Brew House, the 2-1 a fair reflection in a competitive encounter. Peter Kaes scored the first after robbing the sweeper and rounding the keeper nicely, and Julius Gross curled one of his "fast becoming a trademark" frees into the top corner, before some slack marking let UBH score 5 minutes from time. Kendall ultimately held out, and look forward to turning the season around in the next few weeks. Mike Curley and Ed Burke were excellent throughout, ably assisted by captain Deano Regrut deputising in goal.

The "Dirty Thirties" kicked off at the woeful time of 8.30am in Marlboro', for a clash with contenders Southboro'. A great header from a corner by Dr. Ronan Kilbride, gave them a lead 15 minutes before halftime. The pressure of much opposition possession finally told 10 minutes from time, when an equalizer was conceded, despite stellar work from Kenny McCarthy and great battling from Dennis Cunningham. The 1-1 draw still leaves the O-30s unbeaten and close to top of the table.

Training continues in Melrose (Pine Banks park) on Mondays at 8pm, and Moakley Park, South Boston on Thursdays at 8pm.

September 23rd, 2010

September 13th, 2010

Weekend Results

It was a fairly good weekend for the club in terms of results - the A team came back from 3-0 down to draw 3 all, the B team beat Carico 7-3, the C team were undeservedly beaten 2-0 and the Over 30s won 1-0.

The momentum should continue with training this week - Melrose tonight (Monday) at 8 to 9.30pm, then (a change) THURSDAY night at MOAKLEY PARK, South Boston, 8 to 10.30 pm . There will be no Wednesday training for the forseeable future, and training will continue in Moakley park EVERY week until November 5th, since that is where we have gotten a permit for.

2010 Kendall Golf Outing

On a perfect summer Saturday a few weeks ago, August 14th, the Kendall Wanderers Football club held its 5th annual Golf tournament at Newton Commonwealth Golf club.
After signing in and getting bags containing some (much needed) golfballs and tees, as well as some fortification for the impending adventures into the woods, 15 teams set out to do battle with clubs for the big prizes on offer. Robust play, with plenty of bustling and jeering of opposition teams was the order of the day, especially when any of the "Tournament Favourites" were spotted teeing off nearby - Lar Barden (semi-pro) being a particular target of abuse. Also whispered about as early favourites with Paddy Power Bookmakers were Dave Sheehans team, which included Johnny Crowley (who paid for everyone out of his World Cup winnings), Finbarr Burke and Frank O'Connor, but they faded when the drinking got serious.
Plenty of big hitters backed themselves with bookie Brian McCormack to hit the greens on the 9th and 16th holes, and some people paid for their day out with the bets they won (SEE PICS ) - including Eoin McCarthys team, who all backed him to "Show Me the Money" - he did. Dave Powers team, including Issac, Adam and Sandra all could drive, but that was just for show, 'cos when it came to putting..... no dough. After 9 holes, it was clear the beer handed out at the start was beginning to take effect, and those teams of amateur drinkers, including the Canny Brothers, Fergal Glynn and Totti, were falling miserably behind. Experienced pros, like Colm McCaffery, Julian Leonard, Mark Cahillane and John Doyle had paced themselves, and were making steady ground. Also challenging at the halfway stage were dark horses like Mike O'Connor, John Sheehan, John and Andrew O'Sullivan (all teetoalers), while experienced cheater...sorry... "Official Scorecard Marker" Screech Mahon had his team of Deano, Ro and Smarkers near the top of the leaderboard as well.
Big hitters like Johnny Kearns and Eoin McCarthy had brought along some clients as part of their corporate sponsorship (Kevin McDermott & Mrs McCarthy), and newly returned Kendall Alumnus, Tom "Goose" Esch led his team of ex-Amherst College pros in a serious charge towards the finish. The Chairman was aided by Gerry MacMahon, but handicapped by Brian Flynn and Eugene Maguire, so all winning chances were forfeited around the 4th hole - Flynner did put some drink away, though.
In a tight finish, the team of Mossie Walker,Liam Walsh ,Pat Fahey and RB "Painting" McCauley prevailed over Tottis team & the team of Aisling Regan-Doyle, Lar, SuperMac and the Scally - Mossie loudly proclaiming he should have had the same team for the Wolfhounds tournament. The "Closest to the Pin "competition was won by Deano Regrut, with the aid of a sprinkler head, we were told - Deano also recently became a dady for the second time. Lar Barden won the longest drive after eating the whole teams ration of powerbars, despite the team of Barry Roche, the Saint, Rich Naylor and Bruce each taking 4 shots off the tee to try and win the prize. "Worst Drivers" in every sense were Eric Foleys Team, while "The Most Beer Drank" - Team award went to Dennis "Merlin" Cunnigham, Alf Flanagan & the Tokyo Express. The "Most Sober" team award was definitely earned by Mike Tuttle, Pat Riehl, Niall O'Connor and Cliff Drezek, who managed to keep their carts, if not their (golf)balls, out of the woods at all times. A great day out was capped by dinner at Devlins restaurant in Brighton, where prizes were awarded, then disputed, then re-awarded, then fought over, then discussed 'til the early hours....

August 30th, 2010

Weekend Results

The As drew 3-3 with MIT.

The Bs had an impressive 4-1 victory over The Playwright FC to get the second half of the season off to a good start. The hatrick hero was Doug, with Dave Sheehan also chipping in with a well taken free kick.

The Cs were unlucky to loose 6-4 to Analog and did well to battle back from 4 goals down.

The Over 30s started back strong with a 6-0 trashing of Holliston.

Kendall B reach Quarter Finals of BSSL Cup

Kendall B had their biggest win of the season with a 4-1 defeat of Playwright FC on Wednesday night in the second round of the BSSL cup.
After going a goal down to a long range Playwright effort the Kendall stuck to their task and were rewarded with a Joe Delaney goal within minutes, the young winger taking the ball in well before turning his man and shooting past the keeper.
Kendall started to turn on the pressure and were troubling the Playwright from all angles, eventually taking the lead with a great volleyed finish from Niall Gallen, on his debut, after great work down the right.
The second half was more of the same with Kendall piling on the pressure and frustrating the Playwright with a solid defensive display. The lead was extended with about 15 minutes to go when David Sheehan superbly volleyed home when he got on the end of a long range free from the right.
Kendall wasted several chances to completely kill off the game but eventually got the fourth their play deserved when Paul Garvey broke from inside his own half took the ball into the Playwright box holding off his marker before squaring for Joe to apply the simple finish for his second of the game and third in two games.
Overall it was a strong team performance from the Kendall B team who hope to bring this form into their last game in the first half of the season when they take on Boyne Gunners at Madison High School in Roxbury at 12pm on Saturday.

June 21st, 2010

Weekend Results

The As and Bs drew 1-1 on Saturday. Joe Delaney opened the scoring for the Bs with Mark Nolan getting the equalizer for the As.
The C team lost 5-1 to Blackbeard FC. Peter Kaes got the Kendall goal.

Best of luck to the B team who play Playwright FC in the second round of the BSSL Cup on Wednesday evening at 6pm in Boston High School.
