Kendall C traded the long trip west for a long trip south to Franklin for their encounter with Groton House. Previous meetings between these two resulted in very contrasting outcomes, with Kendall C dominating the corresponding encounter last year but coming away on the losing side, with the reverse fixture finishing in a 5-4 goalfest in Kendallís favor. The game got underway with Corey in goals, a back four of Curley, Sully, John Knightly and Ben Brill, a midfield from right to left of Aidan, YB, Sam and Cobhan, with Josh and Peter Kaes providing the fire power upfront.

The weather was hot and heavy, and the grass could have done with a cutting but the game got off to a flyer with Kendall attacking well down both flanks. Aidan in particular was causing havoc down the right and sent in some great early crosses that were well cleared in the end. Groton started to come into the game and were finding some space in middle of the park to set up their attacks, all of which were ably handled by the Kendall rearguard. Kendall went into the game looking to break the trend of going a goal down, and that trend was duelly vanquished inside ten minutes. More excellent work down the right from Aidan set it off, and having gotten into the box, he squared it to Josh who dispatched the ball to the back of the net with aplomb. With their tails clearly up, Kendall switched in the subs and tried to get a solid grip on the game by scoring a second. Good work started down the left saw the ball switched through several players with Pete providing the final through ball to Aidan, who, with only the keeper to beat, saw his effort fly agonisingly wide. This miss seemed to kick Groton into action, and they had some long range efforts well saved by Corey. A neat through ball also sent their centre-forward through one-on-one, but thankfully his delicate chip sailed over the crossbar. Tireless work by the midfield in particular Sam finally saw Kendall turn the match back in their favor, and Josh fired just over from an almost carbon copy of the early chance from which he had scored. Queeno, Ben and Donal were snuffing out any attacks Groton had, though an effort from out wide did shave the top of the crossbar late in the half. Kendall drove on, with Andy and Eddie providing great back-up in the midfield and had the ball in the back of the net just before half-time courtesy of Koby. A corner by Aidan found its way through to Koby, who managed to toe-poke the ball home. However, having initially been awarded the goal, and without any remonstration from the linesman, the referee inexplicably reversed his decision, and gave a free out for a hand-ball. The half ended soon after with Kendall feeling suitably enraged at the decision but fiery for the second half to come. After a good dose of well-earned water, Kendall headed out again for the second half.

The second half saw Groton come out attacking on all cylinders, but Kendall were anaging to hold their ground quite effectively, with the lines of communication clearly audible from everyone across the park. Still, Groton were unlucky not to level on a couple of occasions from corners, with Corey making a good save low to his right off the post, and another at his feet in quick succession. Deano on the other end was sent through on the right after great build-up work from the Kendall midfield and forwards combined, but he fired over. John Blakely had the ball at his feet from a corner but was snuffed out before he got a chance to pull the trigger. As the game wore on, Kendall were coming under more pressure at the back with Groton gradually getting more free flowing in attack. Just as the game looked to be won, a succession of poor decisions culminated in Kendall conceding the equaliser. It all started with a ridiculous line call, with a Kendall throw not given, resulting in Groton bringing the ball down the right flank and delivering a cross into the area. Curley mis-timed his initial header and then gave away a free-kick on the edge of the area, a harsh call but consistent with the referees poor all round performance throughout the game. With the wall set up, the Groton forward still managed to beat it, low to the right, with the ball nestling into the bottom corner of the Kendall goal. Deflated having resisted everything up til then, the game ended on that sour note, but the entire team should take credit from a fantastic performance from each player, from back to front, with everyone putting in a much improved performance that had been missing up til then. The 5 midfielders in particular were outstanding on the day, the rearguard was much tighter and better organised, and the forwards worked their socks off up front chasing down every ball. Roll on the KENDALL C!!!!!
